You’ve probably heard the term facial rejuvenation before. It’s one of those buzz words that magazines and cosmetic/beauty brands throw around. To each of them, the word means something different. Magazines often refer to facial rejuvenation when they’re talking about the newest fad, such as a crazy-sounding procedure that doesn’t have proven results. Cosmetic and beauty brands use the phrase when talking about their latest products; a serum or cream that is said to transform one’s facial complexion.

Physicians, such as Chicago-based, board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Anthony J. Geroulis, have a different definition for the term. Facial rejuvenation procedures, sometimes referred to as facial enhancement surgeries, are cosmetic surgical procedures that aim to restore harmony and balance to facial structures, which have experienced significant signs of aging. Everyone ages; it’s a fact of life. The rate at which we age, however, is different for each person. This rate is based upon cumulative factors, such as genes, biological changes and lifestyle choices. As men and women enter their 50s and 60s, significant changes to the skin and muscle begin to take place. The process of visible facial aging may be confined to one zone of the face, or it may occur with uniformity in all regions of the face and neck.

It is possible to undergo partial or full facial rejuvenation surgery depending on the severity of the changes. Dr. Geroulis is best known for his facelift procedures, which are one of the more common facial rejuvenation procedures. Dr. Geroulis is especially known for these procedures because of the extremely natural results he is able to achieve. The patient should never look tight, pulled or overdone following a facelift procedure. Chicago-based Dr. Geroulis’ patients are always surprised about the short recovery time, as well. The healing process for a facelift surgery is typically 14-20 days. After that time period, the patient is usually free of sutures and able to go out in public. Dr. Geroulis advises his patients to sleep at a 45° angle following surgery in order to minimize the bruising and swelling.

Each facial rejuvenation procedure requires detailed planning, especially when Dr. Geroulis combines several techniques to achieve facial harmony. It is often recommended that the patient undergo more than one procedure at a time in order to cut down on cost and recovery time. These full facial rejuvenations can involve a variety of surgeries, including facelift, forehead eyebrow lift, upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery. Each of these procedures targets a different region of the face. Dr. Geroulis adjusts his approach depending on the zones of the face that need to be targeted and the degree to which the aging process has taken place.
