During your consultation, whether it be to explore surgical options or to seek a second opinion, Dr. Geroulis will use visual inspection and clinical tools to assess the structure and characteristics of your face or body, mode of expression and movement, the aging process, your physical and medical condition, and your current skin condition. You will be advised on surgical and alternative aesthetic treatment options to help you reach your goals and you will have the opportunity to review in depth the recommendations discussed to ensure optimal timing for recovery.
A vital element of the consultation process includes taking into consideration an analysis of your goals and expectations, your health status, lifestyle and short-term and medium-term schedule. You will be encouraged to review credentials, written testimonials from patients, before and after photographs of patients and should you wish, speak to patients who have had the procedure in which you are interested.
During your pre-surgical preparation process, you will meet with the highly specialized medical and support team of nurses, surgical technicians, or patient care coordinators who will clearly outline your pre-operative steps to prepare you for surgery. This will include detailed written instructions on what to eat, what to avoid, medications to take and the vitamins recommended for you in the days leading up to your surgery, as well as, what to expect the day and weeks following your surgery.
Post-operative guidelines for the two weeks following your surgery will be explained to you as well as specific measures to take to promote rapid healing and recovery. You will be expected to see Dr. Geroulis for a series of post-operative follow-up visits over the proceeding days, weeks and months in order that your healing and recovery be closely monitored and its progress recorded.
You may also take advantage of the unique medical spa located within the outpatient center, which specializes in breakthrough anti-aging skin care treatments, specifically for those seeking advanced skin treatments and potent product formulations. Pre-operative and post-operative skin programs are available for men and women, aimed at conditioning the skin prior to surgery, as well as treatments to stimulate collagen formation, lessen hyper-pigmentation and inflammation during the healing period and specific product and treatments plans to help maintain and prolong the results of your surgical procedure. These skin care programs may contribute a critical factor in optimizing patient's result and satisfaction.
Type of Anesthesia
The type of anesthesia used in our surgical facility is monitored anesthesia care (MAC) which combines intravenous sedation (IV sedation) with local anesthetic infiltration or nerve blocks.
Patients who are given monitored anesthesia rather than general anesthesia experience fewer incidences of nausea and vomiting and can be discharged home safely and quickly on the same day following their surgery.
Preparing for Surgery
Once you have been cleared for surgery by the cosmetic surgery medical team, as with most other general types of surgery procedures, you will be told to fast the night before your operation. It is necessary for your stomach to be empty for the morning of surgery to minimize the risk of regurgitation of any undigested foods or liquids.
Prior to surgery, anesthesia services will evaluate your current health and medical history, formulate an anesthetic plan for you, and discuss the anesthesia part of the procedure with you in detail. In order to achieve an optimal anesthetic plan for you, your physician takes into consideration your medical condition, as well as any medications or supplements you have recently been taking. This may include vitamins, herbals supplements or recreational drugs.
At the Surgery Facility
After you have checked in to the surgical facility, Dr. Anthony Geroulis will review with you once again the plan for surgery and carry out the necessary markings, highlighting specific areas to be addressed in surgery. The anesthesia specialist will give you some medications to make you feel more relaxed and you will continue to receive medications and be closely monitored by the clinical team. Pain medications and medication to prevent nausea will be given, as needed, at the conclusion of your anesthetic and when needed throughout your resting in the recovery suite.
Recovery and Aftercare
After surgery, you will be taken to the Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU), commonly called the recovery room. Here you will be watched closely during the immediate postoperative phase, and you will be given medications for pain and nausea, if needed. When you meet the discharge criteria of the surgical center you will be released to go home with a reliable friend or family member who is registered with the facility as you designated caregiver. As is the case following any surgical procedure, as your coordination and various reflexes might be impaired for at least 24 hours, it is a compulsory requirement that you arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to your home or hotel and remain with you for at least 48 hours. You would have already received your detailed aftercare instructions, covering recommended diet, activity levels, medications for home use, care of your surgical site, and follow up appointments at the time of scheduling the surgery by your patient coordinator. Your PACU nurse will review these once again with you and your designated caregiver in the recovery suite. You will be called the evening of the day of surgery by the medical team to check on your progress. You will be seen the following morning by your surgeon and nurse to check your recovery progress and again during the days following your surgery.
