Medical skin peeling is a process whereby a naturally-occurring chemical solution is applied to the surface of the skin to peel away the top layers, which will be replaced during the healing process with a fresh, new skin surface and an improved texture. Superficial peels or epidermal peels are medical procedures, which result in lasting changes by stripping away living cells in the epidermis, setting in motion a healing process to generate a new surface. These are not to be confused with "salon" or "lunch time" peels, which temporarily smooth skin by exfoliating the thin, outermost layer of essentially lifeless cells. .
