The appearance of large, raised, unsightly or disfiguring scars, as well as facial or body blemishes can cause emotional distress and self-consciousness in both adults and children. These types of scars affect certain segments of the population with much more frequency. When the scar is the result of an accident, it can be raised and obvious.
There are treatments to reduce scars and provide a more pleasing aesthetic appearance. One treatment involves using incisions to remove the scar or blemish. Each incision is made into the skin, where the scar is located. This produces scar tissue, nature's method of healing itself. Then the scar is repositioned so it is less conspicuous. Then, if needed, Laser Skin Resurfacing may be used to further diminish the scar. Finally, injections may be made in the incision area to further soften and flatten the scar
Dr. Geroulis can replace an unsightly, disfiguring scar using a variety of methods, including:
- Narrowing the width of the scar
- Flattening a raised scar
- Softening a hard or firm scar
- Camouflaging a scar in a skin fold or in the hair, when possible
The defining characteristic of any scar is that it cannot be removed or eliminated without leaving any evidence it ever existed. However, by replacing an unsightly scar with a better one, the procedure of Scar Revision or Scar Camouflage can dramatically improve the appearance of the scar. The result is a better, less obvious discoloration. The scar is fine-lined, level with the surrounding surface and closer in color to the adjacent skin. The procedure causes no distortion or pull on the surrounding structures, and the results are a less conspicuous scar than the original one.
