The appearance of large, raised, unsightly or disfiguring scars, as well as facial or body blemishes, may cause emotional distress in both adults and children. Such scars affect certain segments of the population with
greater frequency.
Dr. Geroulis can replace an unsightly, disfiguring scar using a variety of methods, including:
- Narrowing the width of the scar
- Flattening a raised scar
- Softening a hard scar
- Camouflaging a scar in a skin fold or in the hair, when possible
Scars, by definition, cannot be removed without leaving evidence that they existed. Scar revision (scar camouflage) can dramatically improve the appearance of a scar.
Each incision (made in the scar) produces
new scar tissue, nature's method of healing. This repositions the scar to make it less conspicuous. If needed, laser skin
resurfacing (laser peel) may be used to further diminish the scar.
Finally, injections may be used to further soften and flatten the scar. This procedure does not distort or pull the surrounding
structures.
The result is a fine-lined scar that is level with the
surrounding surface and closer in color to the adjacent skin. It is much
less conspicuous than the original one.
