Eye lifting
(blepharoplasty) removes excess skin from upper eyelids, corrects drooping
upper eyelids and addresses fatty or puffy bags in a single procedure. This
procedure restores a happier expression to tired, wilted or creased eyes
without altering their natural expression.
Blepharoplasty demands a surgeon
with an excellent knowledge of the orbital zone and eyelids, a mastery of
operatory technique and a meticulous, preoperative analysis of the problems to
be addressed. Men and women usually undergo blepharoplasty around 35 to 40
years of age: eyelids are the first feature to display signs of aging.
There
are separate procedures for upper and lower lid blepharoplasty, which can be
performed individually or in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift,
depending on the patient's aesthetic needs.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Lower eyelid
surgery can rejuvenate tired eyes, dramatically improving appearance,
prominence and contour. Fatty deposits in the lower eyelid area, presenting as
puffy bags, pouches and bulges, are removed. They may occur alone or in
combination with the sagging of excess lower eyelid skin. This is a result of
an inherited tendency toward too much fat for perfect contour and a laxity of
the retaining structures. This procedure can dramatically enhance the
attractiveness and shape of the eyes for a smoother, more relaxed look.
An incision is
made inside the lower lids (transconjunctival approach, one of the most
advanced techniques) to avoid external scars. No skin is removed. The recontoured
skin gives a natural appearance.
Upper
Eyelid Blepharoplasty
By “lifting”
drooping upper eyelids, upper eyelid surgery can improve the contour of the
eyes and reduce prominence, bulges and fine wrinkles, which contribute to a
tired, sad, angry, aged look and, for women, smudged makeup.
Drooping occurs
when a loss of elasticity results in excessive skin. Surgery removes this excess
tissue.
Bulging commonly
occurs from an inherited tendency toward excess fat and laxity of the skin. (It’s
structural fat, which remains unaffected by diet and weight loss.) The most
effective treatment removes the selected fat through an incision hidden in the crease
of the upper eyelid. The skin above the eye is separated from underlying fatty
tissue and muscle and excess fat and skin are removed. In cases where upper
eyelid skin hangs over the eye, peripheral vision may improve. In many cases,
an upper eyelid "lift" may seem to rejuvenate the entire face.
