Correction of Protruding Ears (Otoplasty)

EarFor many with overly large or protruding ears, the psychosocial effects can be extremely traumatic. Children and adults are often subject to teasing, taunts, emotional distress and self-consciousness. This may lead to misbehavior on the part of children or social withdrawal. As children move into adolescence and adulthood, they may modify their hairstyle or avoid social, athletic or other activities that might expose their ears.

Surgery can effectively be performed on children six and older and on adults of any age. Otoplasty usually takes an hour or two. Dr. Geroulis makes an incision behind the ear so that incision lines will not be apparent. A protective dressing protects the ear during the healing stage. The potential psychological benefits of this procedure may be dramatically positive.
